Support for schools

A comprehensive programme of training, practical support and guidance has been put in place to help schools implement the new curriculum in September 2008.

What support will be available?

Department for children, schools and families Qualifications and curriculum authority

For shaping the new curriculum:

  • national conferences for headteachers and curriculum planners on 11-19 reform (October to November 2007)
  • the curriculum website, which includes curriculum models and examples, guidance, planning tools and materials to help evaluate the impact of curriculum changes
  • a curriculum handbook.
Specialist schools and academies trust Quality improvement agency

For teaching the diploma:

  • training supported by a dedicated virtual learning environment
  • ongoing peer support from lead diploma practitioners.

For implementing the whole curriculum:

  • regional workshops on innovative practice and the leadership implications of the changes (November 2007 to January 2008)
  • a flexible resource pack designed by lead practitioners
  • local workshops for curriculum managers (November 2007 to January 2008)
  • local curriculum design groups.
Secondary national strategy

For implementing the subjects in the curriculum: English, Mathematics, Science and ICT:

  • advice at subject leader development meetings
  • practical support and guidance from trained local authority strategy managers and consultants
  • key stage 3 framework and updated National Strategies support materials
  • electronic planning tools.

All other subjects for which there are statutory and non-statutory programmes of study:

  • regional training events led by national subject leaders and regional subject advisers
  • online support, including case studies, subject-specific resources and webcasts.
